People who go through CERT
training have a better
understanding of the potential
threats to their home,
workplace, and community.  We
all can take the right steps to
lessen the effect of these
hazards on ourselves, our
homes, or workplace.  If a
disaster happens it will
overwhelm local first responders.
CERT members can apply the training
learned in the classroom and during
exercises to give critical support to
their family, loved ones, neighbors,
evacuees from other areas, or
associates in their immediate area until
help arrives.  When help does arrive,
CERT provides useful information to
responders and support their efforts,
as directed, at the disaster site.

CERT
members can also assist with
non-emergency project that improve
the safety of the community.
The
team reports to the nearest fire
station to receive assignment during an
emergency.
CERT teams have been used to
distribute and/or install smoke
alarms, replace smoke alarm
batteries in the homes of those
unable to do so and need help.
CERT also distributes disaster
education materials, provide
services at special events, such as
parades, sporting events, concerts,
and more.  The
CERT team was a
great help and visible presence at
the Citrus Festival. Great job!
Graduates receive CERT vests
and bags (at this time) and
receive a certification verifying
their training.  It is used
throughout the United States.
The
CERT teams work together
with other agencies and are
recognized and accepted for
having completed basic emergency
response training.
The training program provides
for citizen self-sufficiency
throughout the development of
multi-functional response
teams, who act as the
community emergency service
during major disasters.
Through this unique program,
people from neighborhoods,
businesses, and community
groups become members of a
CERT team, or perform as
individual leaders, by directing
untrained volunteers in the
initial phase of an emergency.
The CERT members receive 17-20 hours
of initial training. They are given
additional training opportunities with
continuing education programs, including a
full day annual refresher  drill and other
disaster drills are scheduled in the near
future. We're pushing for more drills.
This program is open to everyone.   We
invite those with walkers and wheelchairs
and Captain Lazenby regularly teaches at
senior housing communities and club houses
within mobile home or modular home
developments.
The above disaster drill may "look" too strenuous to some, but there are
radio people needed and staging officers. Comforting and reassuring hands
in the treatment area, helping with the injured.  Awake, delayed, and
minor injured need to be watched and assessed.  In the Incident Command
System (ICS); scribes are needed for division heads in each team. For
instance, Logistics (materials handed out for a working disaster or drill)
need people to keep track of materials used and sent our to different
divisions.  We especially need to train everyone to be prepared to able to
help themselves and those in their homes.
Naturals for training are
neighborhood watch, communities of all
faiths, or free-thinkers that are
committed to service to their
community.  School staff, work place
employees, scouting organizations, and
other groups that come together
regularly for a common purpose are
needed so they can work together as
CERT members.  CERT skills are
useful in disaster and everyday life
events.

A
SERT program was started and now
middle-school students and teachers
are being trained and graduates that
are under the
SERT program. The
acronym,
SERT, stands for School
Emergency Response Team.  The
adults at the school are
CERT
members.  We are encouraged by the
support with the local schools.
Big "Hooray!"
and congratulations to
Mupu School our first
school...
SERT & CERT school graduates!
We now have a full going, "gung-ho" group of
regularly scheduled meetings for those who have
taken the class to plan and work together. It's
really a welcoming, organized group.  The
CERT
team members that wish to attend the meetings
please note that the meetings are on the
3rd
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. of each month and
presently meeting at Logsdon Restaurant, 824 E.
Santa Maria Street, at the Santa Paula Airport.

Directions: south end of 8th street and then turn
left on Santa Maria Street.
It is so rewarding and I don't know why, but even
just by working a little bit with strangers, you
become a real team in no time.  New friends with
the common goal of truly being of such an
important service to others, really brings a group
together.  Some of the
CERT team members have
already used their training by coming upon
accidents and were able to help.
We have lots and lots of graduates from Santa
Paula
CERT. Hope to have more pictures from
our last drill, graduate pictures, parade
pictures, and more email address information
and a phone number directory and phone tree.
We really would like to thank
Sony Music Nashville,
publishers: Windswept Pacific,
BMI, and Gottahaveable Music
and of course, the writers:
Jeffery Steele and Reed
Nielsen for letting use the
song "My Town" for our
CERT
program web site and their
support. We love Montgomery
Gentry, the wonderful singers
of the song, and thank-you
from our hearts for the great
gift to our community with this
song! We are a town with
different views, religions, and
politics..but we all agree to
be of service to our
community. To listen to "My
Town"  on this webpage

Looking Good and Ready!
Go Team CERT!
Coach Captain Steve Lazenby
To become a CERT team member, you will have to take the CERT training from a
sponsoring agency like an emergency management agency, fire department or police
department in the area where you live or work.  Contact the local emergency
manger. We have one that was "called" to do just that!
Captain Steve Lazenby at
City Hall, and his number is: (805) 933-4297. His Email address is:

slazenby@ci.santa-paula.ca.us

Captain Lazenby just needs to know your name and phone number on his message
machine, if he isn't there. Honestly, he will CALL YOU BACK!  He is obsessed
with this program. Then, he'll need to know where you live or work and just ask
him about the education and training opportunities available to you. Oh, and he's
always adding and working hard at keeping the time well-spent making sure not to
go over time on the classes. Captain Lazenby has worked hard at making sure he
has great visuals and the time goes by quickly. Actually, the command system was
hard for me to understand, but the whole operation really fell into place when we
had a drill. The
fog was lifted for me at that point. So, don't give up.

People from all over come and take his classes and we are VERY interested in
someone else to be a trained as a teacher to help carry the load.  We also need
anyone who can translate or teach in Spanish and we now have a great AM radio
station up and working on hospital hill. It will be providing local information and
emergency broadcasts continually.  The broadcast will be in Spanish and English on:
